Wilton Business Spotlight: J Hilburn

Our small business series shares the stories behind our local businesses.

Every local business has a story worth sharing with the community. And that’s the belief behind this exciting series we’ve kicked off at Patch — to shine the spotlight on all our favorite local businesses, and to learn a little about the ones we may not know that well.

I work from home and visit clients at their office or home

Briefly, what business are you in?

Custom Menswear

What’s the most difficult moment or challenge you’ve faced as a business owner?

No storefront means no walk-in traffic. My client base started, and still partially thrives, on me putting myself out there to attract clients on a one-on-one basis. Thankfully now, a good portion of new business are referrals from existing happy clients.

Were there any challenges that made you second guess your decision to be an entrepreneur?

Not having a guaranteed paycheck is a blessing and a curse. Blessing because no one can limit my earning potential and job security rests solely in my hands. Scary because while I have tremendous support from my company and team, my success/failure is mine alone

What’s been your favorite moment or proudest achievement since opening?

Building a team has been gratifying. Being even a small part in someone else’s success is very rewarding.

Seeing a client try on that first custom shirt, pants or suit and watching how his whole demeanor changes. He stands straighter, feels more confident and appears more accomplished when he knows he looks great.

What’s the most innovative idea your employees or customers have had that you put into practice?

I don’t feel that I’ve ever “sold” anything. What I do, is share my excitement for a company and product that I believe in. Listening to my team & client needs is essential to having a successful business.

How do you deal with difficult customers?

Communication is key. Mistakes happen, but most people can be reasonable. My goal is for every client to be happy with their purchases and on occasion that they’re not, we work together to find a solution that satisfies all parties.

How does your business give back or get involved in the community?

I support local businesses and participate in fund-raisers whenever possible. The Chamber of Commerce has been a great way to stay connected and maintain a presence in town.
