Wilton Police Nab 5 For Identity Theft

The suspects were using stolen payment cards to make low value purchases, and pocketing cash back on each transaction, according to police.

WILTON, CT — Police say they broke up a fraud scheme after charging three adults and two minors with identity theft on Friday.

Wilton officers responded to a complaint from the Stop & Shop at 5 River Road around 7 p.m. There police say the suspects were using stolen payment cards to make low value purchases, and pocketing cash back on each transaction.

Officers located the suspects in a rental vehicle in the parking lot. "Upon approach of the vehicle officers observed marijuana in plain view as well as the odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle," according to the police report.

Following an investigation, police say they found 12 suspected stolen/counterfeit credit and/or debit cards, approximately one ounce of marijuana, 14 cell phones, receipts from cash back transactions, and $15,243 in U.S. currency.

Chadrick Wellington Henry, 18; Orlando Patel, 18; Jermaine Stewart, 31; and two 17-year-olds, all from Brooklyn, NY, were charged with third-degree identity theft, fourth-degree larceny, and other payment card-related offenses. On Aug. 11, the adults are scheduled to appear before Norwalk Superior Court, and the minors at Juvenile Court in Stamford.

This is the second cash-back scheme the Wilton PD has broken up at that Stop & Shop in less than a week, according to police. On July 27, another Brooklyn, NY, man was arrested and charged with larceny and illegal use of a payment card, as well as assault.
