Wilton Police Warn of Potential Scam
A Cheesespring Road resident was smart enough to not fall victim.

A Cheesespring Road resident reported to police on Dec. 4 he had received a $3,500 check in the mail along with an announcement that said he had won a supposed lottery drawing.
According to the announcement he received, the man was instructed to cash the $3,500 check and then send $3,100 to clearing agency, police said.
“This is a money making scam to obtain monies from notified parties of their ‘winnings,’” police said in a press release. “Should the resident have cashed the check, he would have found out that the account had insufficient funds to cover the check. The bank would then attempt recovery of the funds from the resident’s account, and the perpetrator would have the resident’s account information for identity theft pursuit.”
