Wilton Schools To Reopen Tomorrow

Wilton Public Schools will be open tomorrow, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gary Richards said in a robocall Tuesday.

According to Connecticut Light and Power, seven percent of the town—528 customers—is still without power.

There are still 745 customers in Wilton who don't have power. That's 10 percent of town. 

John-Christopher Salvatore of Wilton Sport & Fitness said his business is open to all Wiltonians.

"We would like to offer our center at no charge for anyone to recharge, get warm, take a hot shower," he said. "We have several in the mens and ladies locker room and we have some free hot coffee."

One week later, 25 percent of Wilton still remains without power following Hurricane Sandy. The town issued the following update Monday morning:

CL&P Power restoration activity restored approximately 1,400 residences yesterday dropping Wilton’s outage level to 26%, as of 8:00 a.m. Approximately 5,400 Wilton residences have had power restored since the low point of the storm.

Crew allocations to Wilton by CL&P have been increased by two additional line crews.

Areas where we have been advised CL&P crews are at work are as follows:

• Side roads off of Ridgefield Road (Rt. 33) north to the Ridgefield line, including Silver Spring Road.

• Cheese Spring Road area southwest to Valley Road

• Sturges Ridge Road and Sharp Hill Road area and side roads

• Olmstead Hill Road, Catalpa Road and Warnacke Road areas

• Westport Road (Rt. 33) southeast to the Westport line and side roads.

• Nod Hill Road area (includes Piper Hill Road).

CL&P has advised that major priority is being placed on primary circuits to get the most residences back as soon as possible. Restoration of outages involving single residences in areas due to transformer problems or service line connections will start Monday afternoon.

Town of Wilton officials are doing everything possible to communicate citizens’ outages by street address to CL&P. We recognize the agonizing ordeal that many citizens are going through due to many days without power and cold temperatures. Line crew resources in Wilton have been increased each day by CL&P to deal with the extensive damage and power restoration activity.

The following message was sent by Wilton Emergency Management:

Substantial power restoration progress has been made in Wilton today, but is not yet reflected in CL&P’s outage map, which is a manually adjusted outage estimate for each town. As crew chiefs energize circuits the information is called in and the outage map is then adjusted manually. CL&P advises that restoration reports may be delayed and consequently, the true power outage level of the town is not reflected until later in the evening or early morning.

CL&P crew chief reports to Wilton’s Emergency Operations Center indicated power has been restored in many of today’s utility crew work areas.

Town officials were advised that Pine Ridge Road has substantial damage and will require several crews to make repairs to restore power, which CL&P indicated will be a goal on Monday.

The Nod Hill Road area was also confirmed as a current priority due to the large number of residents on this road.

The Town of Wilton continues to operate under state of emergency conditions. Residents are requested to check elderly or disabled neighbors to determine if any help is required for these citizens. Please call 203-834-6260 to report residents who are in need of assistance.

Bottled water continues to be available at the Fire Station at the Wilton Town Hall.

CORRECTION: The transfer station is open next week during normal hours for household waste only, according to Chief Paul Milositz, the town's emergency management director. No storm debris can be accepted. A location for storm debris is being set up and will be communicated when it becomes available.

The Wilton Public Schools will be closed on Monday, the Town has announced.

In addition there will be no school on Tuesday due to Election Day — however all polling locations will be open, the Town said in an alert sent out late Sunday morning.

According to the Town, approximately 1,600 residences had their power restored overnight on Saturday. Currently 3,297 of 7,320 CL&P customers in Wilton — or about 45% of the town — are still without power, however CL&P senior management expects crews to make "major progress" today. The utility announced yesterday that it expects to reach 95% power restoration for its entire service region by Monday.

As of today there are 26 line crews, 15 tree crews, five pole setting crews and six service crews, working to restore power in Wilton. In addition four DPW crews are working to clear roads.

As per the town's alert, areas where crews are scheduled to work today include:

• Side roads off of Ridgefield Road (Rt. 33) from Deforest Road north to the Ridgefield line
• Cheese Spring Road area southwest to Valley Road Sharp Hill Road area and side roads
• Sturges Ridge Road area and side roads
• Olmstead Hill Road, Catalpa Road, Warncke Road and Chicken Street areas
• Range Road, Old Boston Road and Old Belden Hill Road areas
• Westport Road (Rt. 33) southeast to Westport line. Following a short power turn off this morning, CL&P expects to energize this road. Power restoration on the side roads will follow.

The town's transfer station will be operating next week at normal hours and residents.

The Comstock Community Center remains open for charging of cell phones and laptops and also as a warming center. The shelter at the Center will be open at 6 p.m. this evening.

As of 9 a.m., 45 percent of Wilton customers are currently without power, according to CL&P.

As of 4 p.m., 62 percent of Wilton customers are currently without power, according to CL&P.

Twenty-four CL&P crews are working in Wilton on Saturday, up from nine yesterday, according to a statement by First Selectman Bill Brennan via robocall. CL&P is committing 'significant' improvement today, but Tuesday is the estimate for total restoration, he said.

The rest of the statement is as follows:

In addition, eight tree crews and six service crews will also be working in Wilton, plus the four DPW crews supported by 20 U.S. Forest Service chain saw operators.

Last night tree crews worked on Dudley Road and Nod Hill Road to clear downed trees on these roads.

Areas when crews are working today are as follows:

·        Route 33 (Westport Road)

·        Sturges Ridge Road and Hurlbutt Street

·        Range Road

·        Olmstead Hill Road

·         Millstone Road, Pin Oak Lane and Ruscoe Road

The major priority is power restoration and LC&P expects significant progress will be made in Wilton today. This morning, CL&P issued an estimated power restoration time of Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at 11:30 P.M. for Wilton and other towns in our utility district.

An additional delivery of bottled water is expected today. An announcement will be made when supplies arrive and are available at Wilton Fire Station.

First Selectman Bill Brennan sent out the following clarification to his previous robocall:

"The Town of Wilton wishes to clarify an earlier message communicated to the community. All Town roads are now passable via avenues of detour. Roads do have blockages that we are aware of and are working to clear, but alternate access is available."

The Wilton Board of Education is scheduled to have a special meeting on Monday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. in the professional library at Wilton High School.

In his latest robocall to Wilton residents, First Selectman Bill Brennan expressed his frustration with CL&P.

"Due to severe damage to the power system in Wilton, restoration of power has been frustratingly slow and no estimate is available yet from CL&P indicating when power will be fully restored," he said.

"The major problem impacting power restoration is directly related to the extensive damage to the power system throughout Wilton. Today, CL&P has nine line crews, seven tree crews and seven service crews operating in Wilton. Twenty U.S. Forest Service chain saw operators are continuing to assist Department of Public Works crews with tree clearing work. CL&P officials have increased resources allocated to Wilton and promised that additional crews will be assigned to Wilton when available."

Areas where crews are working today are as follows:

• Old Belden Hill Road, Belden Hill Road and Range Road
• Sturges Ridge Road, Cherry Lane and Hurlbutt Street
• Route 33 (Westport Road)
• Catalpa Road, Olmstead Hill Road, Hulda Hill Road

"Crews are working to restore power in these areas, which it should be noted, may not be immediate due to extensive equipment damage. Town officials during daily field surveys of utility company activity have thanked crews from Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Carolina, Missouri and Quebec for their assistance in restoring power to our community. Fluctuations of CL&P’s power outage map are due to utility crews working on various circuits to restore local power."

He also said all of Wilton's roads are now passable.

Connecticut Light & Power reports 74 percent of Wilton residents are without power.

Wilton's powerless rate dropped to 63 percent, with 4,627 customers out of 7,320 still in the dark.

Mark Amatrudo of the Wilton Fire Department sent out the following press release Thursday evening:

"The Town of Wilton requested and received additional personnel from the US Forest Service to assist Town Department of Public Works crews with tree clearing and road opening operations." 

"The crew of 20 chain saw workers from Minnesota arrived this afternoon and has been working side by side with Department of Public Works crews to cut and clear trees, as approximately 40 Wilton roads still have significant blockages."

"Utility crews from Wisconsin, Missouri, Nebraska and Quebec were also working in Wilton today."

According to an email blast sent out by the town, Connecticut Light & Power has nine line crews, four tree crews and seven service crews working in Wilton today. The service crews are the ones which restore power.

At the peak of the storm's damage, 117 roads in Wilton were impassable. Town officials say 77 of those roads have opened to traffic by now. 

Residents are able to pick up bottled water at the Wilton Fire Department starting at 1 p.m.

Crews will be working in the following areas:

• Catalpa Road
• Mountain Road
• Indian Hill Road
• Cedar Road Area
• Sturges Ridge Road
• New Canaan Road (Rt. 106)

In addition, efforts are being made to restore power to the Mather Street area to enable the Transfer Station to re-open, where storm damage also occurred.

Initially, 117 Wilton roads were blocked due to downed wires and trees.  As of this date, 77 roads are now clear or passable in one lane. 

No power restoration estimates are available yet for Wilton. However, CL&P's Senior Vice President for Emergency Restorations, publicly stated this morning that CL&P expects "substantial restoration to be completed by Monday or Tuesday of next week."

Many roads are still closed, and officials advise residents to stay inside their homes because of downed wires, which may become energized as attempts to restore power are made.

Wilton Schools are closed on Friday, Nov. 2.

A decision concerning our ability to operate the schools on Monday, November ^5th will be based on the status of the recovery efforts over the weekend," Dr. Richards wrote on the school website. "At this point we have a large number of roads that are closed or that or only partially open for smaller vehicular traffic.

 We will make an announcement about  the status of opening schools on Monday as soon as we have some assurance that we can transport students safely.

Power restoration continues to inch forward. Connecticut Light & Power is reporting 78 percent of Wilton customers remain in the dark—5,746 out of 7,320.

According to Connecticut Light & Power, 79 percent of Wilton households remain without power. That's 5,842 out of 7,320 customers.

• Despite today's "Trunk-or-Treat" event, 'regular' Halloween has been rescheduled for Friday, Nov. 9.
• Voting will go on as planned Tuesday, Nov. 6, as all of Wilton's three polling districts have power.

Hundreds showed up to the "Trunk-or-Treat" Halloween event in Wilton at Cider Mill School. Wilton residents should be thankful to Artie diRocco, who organized the event this year and last. 

"I have tears in my eyes from this," one mom said.

The Wilton Library will once again open up at 9 a.m. on Thursday and Friday.

The town has updating the road closure listing on its website, indicating whether the roads are passable or not.

According to town officials, line crews, tree crews and service crews are working in town today, though Connecticut Light & Power will wait until tomorrow to give estimates as to when power will be restored in Wilton. Progress was made yesterday, town officials said, but 83 percent of the town still remains in the dark.

The Wilton Library, Wilton Family Y and Comstock Community Center are open today, and residents can get bulk water at the fire department but are encouraged to bring containers. 

At around noon today, removal of a large tree that was partially down on Route 7, near Arrowhead Road, commenced, temporarily shutting down Route 7 and causing major backups.

The following message was sent by town officials:

Due to power outages and unsafe road conditions, there is concern for the safety of Wilton’s children. Therefore, Town officials have decided to postpone Halloween celebrations until Friday, November 9, when  power supply and road conditions should be back to normal.  Parents are urged to postpone “trick or treating” until November 9. Thank you for your cooperation.

Connecticut Light & Power is reporting 83 percent of Wilton (6,106 out of 7,230) is out of power.

Rather than trick-or-treating on Halloween, there is going to be a "trunk-or-treat" event at Cider Mill School, beginning at 3 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring candy. 

The Wilton Y is running off a generator, "with limited access and has made our locker rooms and showers available to all community members in need following the storm," according to Kristina Barrett. The Y will open at 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday, but no classes will be held.

Janet Crystal provided Patch with some good news for Wilton residents: 

"We are pleased to announce that Wilton Library will re-open on Wednesday, October 31, at 9 a.m., an hour earlier than usual to be of service to the community. Trending in the wrong direction: As of 5 p.m., Connecticut Light & Power is reporting 82 percent of Wilton is without power—6,007 out of 7,320 customers.

Residents can pick up bulk water near the fire department, but they have to bring their own containers.

Dr. Gary Richards, superintendent of schools, sent out a phone call Tuesday saying schools would remain closed Wednesday and Thursday, and he and his administration will assess the situation as to whether to open on Friday.

According to Connecticut Light & Power, 80 percent of the town is still without power.

Residents are encouraged to stay off the roads.

"Town officials are requesting citizens to stay at home and remain off the roads to allow utility company crews to make safe downed trees and power lines and for Wilton Public Works and state crews to clear blocked roads," First Selectman William Brennan said in a CodeRed message to the town.

Eighty percent of Wiltonians don't have electricity at their houses. Connecticut Light & Power is reporting 5,866 customers out of 7,320 are now in the dark.

More roads have closed in Wilton: English Drive, Saint Johns, Ridgefield Road and Sturges Ridge Road. Nod Hill Road has one lane that is passable.

According to Connecticut Light & Power, 23 percent of Wilton households are out of power. That's 1,686 out of 7,320 customers.

West Meadow Road is closed due to wires on fire, according to the Wilton Emergency Management Team. Raymond Lane is closed as well, due to down trees and wires. The three roads reported closed earlier today remain closed as of this time.

According to Connecticut Light and Power, 20 percent of Wilton customers (1,474 out of 7,320) are without power.

According to the Wilton Emergency Management Team, Coley Road, Gaylord Drive South and Wilridge Road are currently closed because of down trees and wires.

Nine percent of Wilton customers (708 housesholds) are currently without power, according to figures supplied by Connecticut Light and Power.

"Latest State of emergency management information predicts Hurricane Sandy winds to peak today between 3:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. Tuesday, which will curtail CL&P power restoration activity during this dangerous weather period," Fire Chief Chief Paul Milositz wrote in an email blast sent out Monday afternoon. "Town officials urge all residents to stay home unless absolutely necessary."

Miller-Driscoll School is available to residents should they need shelter or assistance, Milositz said. Assistance is also available at the Wilton Family Y, the Comstock Community Center, Trackside Community Center, St. Matthews Church (WEBCO Complex) and the Georgetown Cultural Center (G&B Building).

Gov. Malloy signed an executive order extending the in-person voter registration deadline in Connecticut to Thursday, November 1, at 8 p.m. for those who intend to vote in the upcoming election.

The Wilton YMCA will open at 5 a.m. Monday morning and close at 11 a.m. Residents are permitted to use the YMCA for electricity, showers and water.

"We will hopefully reopen on Tuesday morning depending on power and flooding. All classes and school related programs are cancelled," according to an email sent to members. "Please check the Y website for updates at www.wiltonymca.org."

The Fourth Congressional District Debate between Jim Himes and Steve Obsitnik at Wilton High School is canceled at request of both candidates, because of the storm's approach and evacuation of Connecticut's coastal areas.

Wilton Public Schools will be closed on Monday and Tuesday. Miller Driscoll will be used as an emergency shelter and will be open Monday.

The following message was posted on the Town of Wilton Web site:

  As indicated in last night’s Code Red message, all citizens are encouraged to prepare immediately for Hurricane Sandy.  This severe storm is forecast to hit the Connecticut area starting late Sunday evening and into Monday.

  Latest weather information from state emergency management meteorologists indicate that Hurricane Sandy is a powerful 800 mile wide hybrid storm that will involve winds of 40 - 50 mph with heavy rain – possibly 6-10 inches for the Connecticut area.  As a result, widespread power outages and flooding are also expected in our area.

  This is a major threat to Wilton and consequently, Town officials are urging all citizens to use the weekend to prepare for this storm.  Please visit the Town web site (www.wiltonct.org) for detailed emergency preparedness information.  Be sure to have adequate food and water supplies to last at least 3-4 days.  Move items that could be blown away by high winds to protected areas to avoid damage and injuries.  Prepare candles and flashlights for expected power outages due to downed trees and power lines.  Fill autos with gasoline, as supplies might run out if fuel deliveries are impacted.

  As previously announced, the Town of Wilton will communicate emergency information and road closings through various media resources, including Facebook and Twitter social media channels.  Please check the Town web site and local news outlets for official emergency information.  In addition, emergency information will also be posted at various public locations throughout the town.  School closings and other information will be reported on the Board of Education web site and on the Town web site.

  On Monday, October 29^th, the Town’s Emergency Operations Center will be operational.  A dial in “hot line” will be established to provide an additional source of emergency information.  The State of Connecticut and all public utilities have made major advance preparations to deal with expected power outages and other storm emergencies.

  In summary, a major powerful storm is expected to impact the Wilton area on Monday.  Use the mild weekend weather to fully prepare for this significant storm emergency!  Now is the time to get ready.  Many thanks for everyone’s cooperation.

It appears that Halloween is once again bringing with it a monster storm. 

Experts expect Hurricane Sandy to smash into Connecticut early next week. Having learned from last year's Tropical Storms Irene and Alfred, officials are encouraging residents to be prepared.

According to the town website, the Wilton Emergency Management Team has been tracking Sandy's progression. As updates become available, the team will post news on this website. The Wilton Emergency Management Team also has a Facebook page. 

The state has put together a hurricane preparedness guide and is encouraging residents to stock up on supplies before the storm comes. Information supplied by Gov. Dannel Malloy provides residents with an idea of what to have on hand:

Basic Emergency Supply Kit

• One gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
• At least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
• Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• A whistle to signal for help
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
• Can opener
• Local maps
• Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger.
