The Windsor Garden Club is proud to announce Windsor High School senior Maya Lumia as the recipient of the 2019 Scholarship Award. Maya plans to attend Manchester Community College to study environmental science with a focus on marine biology.

Maya was presented with her scholarship at the Windsor High School’s Senior Scholarship & Awards Night, June 6, then she was honored again at the Windsor Garden Club monthly meeting along with her parents, Chuck and Elizabeth, June 17.

Maya attended Windsor High School for three years, previously attending Metropolitan Learning Center in Bloomfield, Conn. for one year.

She said that Windsor High School’s course variety and supportive staff helped her to narrow her focus to concentrate specifically on environmental conservation.

“The world we live in is riddled with environmental problems that cannot be ignored anymore, and the current political atmosphere we live in is greatly affecting that,” Maya said in her scholarship essay.

At Manchester Community College, she would like to take environmental science and marine biology classes to gain a higher understanding of marine ecosystems and the effects of pollutants on its species and hopes to someday work with the government to create protection laws.

One of the Windsor Garden Club’s annual resolutions is to award a scholarship to a deserving Windsor student. The scholarship is funded through the WGC Garden Mart held each May and by the club’s biannual Garden Tour, being held this year, July 13.

“Thank you to the many dedicated and hardworking Windsor Garden Club members, and to all the enthusiastic townspeople who attend our fundraisers and make this scholarship possible,” said Cindy Daniels, WGC Scholarship Committee Chair.
