Windsor Public Schools Celebrate Veterans Day
Windsor Public Schools invite veterans and the general community to take part in Veterans Day activities at several area schools.

WINDSOR, CT - ALL Windsor Public Schools are open with events/activities to teach students why we honor veterans. All veterans and the general public are invited to our schools for these events.
Windsor High School, 50 Sage Park Rd., 860-687-2020:

9:15am to approx. 10:00 am.Windsor High School will honor veterans with a ceremony in Windsor High School’s auditorium. The ceremony will feature speakers Superintendent of Schools Dr. Craig Cooke and Principal Uyi Osunde, as well as the ROTC color guard, the High School bands and choral groups, and a presentation on Medal of Honor winners by Rho Kappa, the National Social Studies Honor Societyat the High School. There will also bea “living museum” of local veterans on display throughout the lobby and other bulletin boards. Weather permitting, the Rho Kappa students will place gold stars on the school lawn. Each star representsa local veteran who is buried in a Windsor cemetery;there are more than 3000 of them created by Windsor students and faculty. The event was organized and planned by the Social Studiesand History Department. The event is free, the public is invited, and will be later televised on WIN-TV, courtesy of the high school’s tv production studio.

All day –8:05 am to 2:50pm. Sage Park Middle School invites families to participate in their Veteran’s Day activities.Scheduled throughout the day, activities include visitsby local veterans, reading stories of valor and courage, an activity about the Purple Heart and local recipient Daniel Bissel, as well as opportunities for students to write or email troops currently deployed. Sage Park’s“White Table” is on display in the main lobby.This tradition originated during the Vietnam War as a symbol for service members held prisoner of war or missing in action.Solidarity and solemn, it is a table where no one ever sits.Located around the building are the various “Walls of Honor” created by each team using flagsto honor Windsor veterans, particularly Sage Park family and friends.
Oliver Ellsworth, 730 Kennedy Rd., 860-687-2070:
2:00 pm to 2:30 pm: Veterans are invited for light refreshments in the Family Resource Center. 2:30pm to 3:15 pm: Assembly: Oliver Ellsworth invites veterans, families and friends of veterans to a school-wide assembly beginning at 2:30 pm. Veterans from each branch of the armed forces will be recognized as Oliver Ellsworth's special guests and students will share presentations in their honor. The Girl Scouts, Daisies and Boy Scouts will lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Please show your patriotism by wearing RED, WHITE and/or BLUE.
Poquonock, 1760 Poquonock Ave., 860-687-2080:
9:00 am to 10:00 am. Assembly at 9:30 am: “Thank You for Your Service” will be the theme of Poquonock School’s Veterans Day Assembly. Guest veterans will be hosted in the Family Resource Center at 9:00 am and an assembly will follow at 9:30 am in the gymnasium. The program will consist of a flag ceremony, a moment of silence, poetry, and musical selections. We will be kicking off a school wide collection drive, benefiting Send Hometown Windsor to the Troops. “Thank you for your service” letters, cards and pictures will be created by students and will be sent along with a collection of food and personal items to Windsor troops. Veterans and active duty military personnel will then be invited to spend time in our classrooms to read to our students, discuss the significance of Veterans Day, and answer questions students have about military service. We welcome local veterans to join us for the assembly.
CloverStreet School, 57 Clover St., 860-687-2050:
1:30 pm to 2:30 pm Assembly at 2:00 pm:Clover Street School Family Resource Center will host a reception at 1:30 pm for veterans and their families.Light refreshments will be served.Following the reception,veterans will be escorted to the cafeteria by students for a school wide assembly that will begin at 2:00 pm. Boysand Girls Scouts will serve as the honor guard for the veterans as they enter the assembly. During the program, veterans will be honored through songs, a call and response featuring the Kiwanis Kids (K-Kids) and special presentations by students.A Wall of Honor thatshowcasesrelatives and friends of the Clovercommunitywho have served or continue to serve our country.Each classroom willalso read and discuss, “H is For Honor: A Military Family Alphabet,” by Devin Scillian.
John F. Kennedy School, 530 Park Ave., 860-687-2060:
9:00 a.m. -10:15 a.m.Assembly at9:30 a.m.The John F. Kennedy School invited families to participate in theirVeteran’s Day activities. Included with the invite was a picture frame that the students can color and attach a picture of a Veteran that they know or is in their family. The pictures will then be posted on the wall of honor. A breakfast will take place in the JFK media center at9:00 a.m.and veterans and their families are invited to attend. A school-wide assembly will take place from9:30 -10:15 a.m. The assembly will include a poetry reading, music selections by their choir, band, and strings as well as a presentation from the students. Students are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue. Students that are in scouts or brownies are encouraged to wear their uniforms and will be leading the veterans into the assembly. Books about Veteran's day will alsobe read in the classrooms throughout the day.
