In addition to a number of April vacation activities, the park and recreation department has developed a football program for kids as young as four.

Let’s be blunt: Spring just isn’t the time for sitting down and wasting away indoors.

Instead, it’s the time for wiping away the cobwebs, springing into step and enjoying the great outdoors.

Accordingly, the Windsor Locks Park and Recreation has organized a number of activities — some new and some old favorites — guaranteed to provide families with the best opportunities for fun.

Among this season’s highlights is a brand new sport.

“This is sort of a collaboration between the Park and Recreation department and the (Windsor Locks) Jets,” Park and Recreation department Director David Wrabel said of the addition of youth flag football to the local athletics fold.

According to Wrabel, the program will allow kids in town to play more football and get started at an earlier age.

The program is for boys and girls and welcomes players aged 4 to 14. The season will run from April 29 through June 29 with practices one night per week and one game on saturdays at Windsor Locks High School.

What may be most attractive to families is the cost. Parents can sign up their football enthusiast for just $15.

In addition to flag football, the department is offering the following activities this spring:

  • Mon., April 15 — Yo-Yo People — A show featuring yo-yo tricks spruced up with music and comedy. 10 a.m. at North Street School. Free.
  • Tues., April 16 — “The Lucky Show” with Lucky Bob — A variety show featuring magic, juggling, audience interaction and more. 10 a.m. at North Street School. Free.
  • Wed., April 17 — Juggler Bryson Lang — Lang brings a unique juggling featuring comedy and glo-in-the-dark balls. 10 a.m. North Street School. Free.
  • Wed., April 17 — Deadline for Spring Soccer Registration — Grades pre-k through 8 can learn the fundamentals of the game and scrimmage. One practice per week for the youngest. Two practices per week for grade 2 through 8.
Registration for all programs can be achieved by contacting the park office at 860-627-1420. The office is open Monday through Wednesday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Thursday from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
