WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — We return today to the great photo book Images of America: Windsor Locks, compiled by Leslie Matthews Stansfield in 2003. On page 48, we find an undated photo of a home at 46 Elm St.

The caption merely indicates the home was owned by Charles E. Chaffee, and the people shown in front are John Shaughnessy, Etta Chaffee and Mary Talbot. Charles E. Chaffee (1818-1907) was a textile manufacturer who employed 200 people at his underwear mill in Windsor Locks, and provided funding for construction of Memorial Hall in 1890.

The brick exterior house was built in 1850, and consists of 3,545 square feet of living space. It contains 11 rooms, including six bedrooms, according to town property records.
