Picture Windsor Locks - Then And Now

An old photo and brief story from Windsor Locks history, and how that site appears today.

WINDSOR LOCKS, CT — After a brief hiatus, we return today to the great photo book Images of America: Windsor Locks, compiled by Leslie Matthews Stansfield in 2003. On page 114, we find an aerial view of the downtown area taken just prior to the redevelopment project of the early 1970s.

Every commercial building on Main St. north of the Route 140 bridge was torn down; the only original structure still standing is the historic train station, which is out of camera view in this shot. Note the previous alignment of Church St. straight down the hill to the north of the bridge; it was later reconfigured to align directly across from 140.

Here is a more contemporary look at the same scene, courtesy of Google Maps.
