Scantic River Deemed Unsafe for Swimming Due to High Bacteria Levels

ENFIELD, CT — One of Enfield's favorite swimming holes has been deemed unfit for water activities following testing performed Wednesday.

Results from water quality testing of the Scantic River at Powder Hollow State Park showed very elevated levels of e.coli in the river, according to the Scantic River Watershed Association.

Powder Hollow is currently four times higher than last week's test results, with the number of viable bacterial cells at 1299.7/100ml. Swimming is not recommended once this number exceeds 235/100ml.

Other spots tested on the Scantic that were deemed unsafe included Broad Brook Road and Town Farm Road. Nearby, spots tested in Somers and East Windsor were also found to have unacceptable bacterial levels.
