Tropical Storm Isaias Hits Northern CT Late, But Powerfully

The storm caused a considerable amount of damage Tuesday afternoon and evening, downing trees and power lines throughout much of the region.

NORTH-CENTRAL CT — Tropical Storm Isaias caused a considerable amount of damage Tuesday afternoon, downing trees and power lines throughout much of Connecticut, but sparing the majority of the northern part of the state, particularly the Interstate 91 corridor north of Hartford - at least until late afternoon.

As of 6 p.m., Eversource reported more than 277,000 homes in Connecticut were without power, or 21.63 percent of its nearly 1.3 million customers. By 10 p.m., there were more than 521,000 outages, or 40.73 percent, and at 3:30 a.m., the figures were 581,154 homes and 45.3 percent.

Windsor had 760 power outages reported by Eversource at 6 p.m., or 5.59 percent of the town. Progressing further up the highway, Windsor Locks had just 5 outings, East Windsor had 90 and Enfield had 35.

By 3:30 a.m., those numbers had ballooned to 7,742 outages in Enfield, 7,574 in Windsor, 3,859 in East Windsor and 2,202 in Windsor Locks.

To the east of I-91, Manchester was hardest hit with 16,952 outages by 3:30 a.m., while Vernon had 7,769 and Tolland sustained 4,469. South Windsor reported 4,372 outages, Ellington had 3,074, Stafford had 1,921 and Somers reported 1,688.

West of the interstate found Avon in dire straits with 8,552 customers without power, comprising 97.9 percent of the town's service. Bloomfield had 4,737 outages, Simsbury had 4,376 and Granby had 1,028.

Windows were blown out of a building near Rockville Superior Court, and there were many road closures due to large felled trees and downed power lines in the region.
