MIDDLEBURY, CT — Middlebury's St. John of the Cross Church and Southbury's Sacred Heart Church are merging, according to officials, writes the Waterbury Republican-American.

The two are merging because the Archdiocese of Hartford, which oversees the churches and several more in the region, has seen a drop in parishioners and priests in recent years.

Since 2017, the Archdiocese reportedly has closed 26 churches and consolidated 59 others throughout the area.
