Historically, the holiday of Lag B'Omer was celebrated by going out to the fields for introspection and celebration. The concept of a Lag B'Omer parade celebrating Jewish Unity was initiated in 1956 by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, whose upcoming 20th Yahrtzeit (anniversary of passing) will be commemorated by individuals and communities the world over.
