WOODBURY -- Bob LaBonne Jr couldn’t sleep at 4am Christmas Day. The huge wind-and-rain storm had cut power in the area, and he was worried that food would spoil in the four LaBonne’s Markets. As he drove past the Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department to check his store and its standby generator, he saw firefighters assembling to deal with named Storm Bailey’s downed trees, live wires, and local flooding. “I had to do something for them,” the LaBonne’s CEO said later. “We sent over all the prepared sandwiches we had plus fresh fruit and plenty of cookies. Firemen like cookies with their coffee.” Fire Chief Janet B. Morgan noted that up to ten firefighters were on duty at any moment from the wee hours to mid-afternoon instead of having family time. “It’s what we do,” she said, “and we get tremendous support from the community such as Bob’s generosity.” ###
