Middlebury Financial Officer Retirement Surprises Town Officials

The town's financial officer unexpectedly retired at the beginning of the month.

MIDDLEBURY, CT — The town's longtime financial officer announced his retirement at the beginning of the month. Lawrence Hutvagner, 65, of Beacon Falls, told the Waterbury Republican-American that he made the decision a few months ago but the move came as a surprise to other town officials.

First Selectman Edward St. John didn't comment on the retirement other than to say the town's finances are in good shape.

Hutvagner, who has served the town since 2009, said a police officer helped him carry out his personal belongings on his last day, though it wasn't clear why he had a police escort.
