Victim Identified In Fatal Kayaking Accident In Middlebury

A 26-year-old man was reported missing after his kayak overturned on Saturday, according to reports.

MILDDEBURY, CT — A body was recovered Sunday near where a kayaker went missing on Saturday afternoon in Long Meadow Pond, reports Fox 61. The body was found Sunday near the spill way, according to Fox 61.

The victim has been identified as Brian Saucier, 26, of Prospect, according to Fox 61. Sonar was used to help locate the missing kayaker.

Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department said earlier that first responders were at Long Meadow Pond searching for a lost kayaker on Saturday afternoon and they returned Sunday.

The search began around 2:30 p.m. Saturday and began again on Sunday, Fox 61 reported. A 911 call was placed as people heard an overturned 26-year-old male kayaker calling for help.

Assisting in the search included the: Region 5 Dive Team Oxford, Fire-EMS Newtown, Underwater Search & Rescue - NUSAR CT DEEP, Middlebury Police, MVFD Ladies Auxiliary, Watertown Fire, Naugatuck Ambulance, Naugatuck Fire Police and all the Region 5 Dive Department including Morris, Bantam, Terryville and Thomaston fire departments.

"PLEASE REMEMBER while the days are getting warm the water is still very cold. Wear your life jacket while boating especially before Memorial Day," fire officials said.
