Cityfest, Inc., continues its year-round jazz concert series celebrating Wilmington’s own Clifford Brown with the CD release party of Jonathan Whitney and The Whitney Project on Friday, November 20, 2020, at the Christina Cultural Arts Center. A limited number of in-person tickets are available but anyone can purchase tickets to view the concert live online. Attendees and viewers will enjoy tracks from Whitney’s debut album, Life’s Dimensions. Whitney is a 2020 Delaware Division of the Arts Established Artist Fellow in Jazz Composition and the artist-in-residence at the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew in Wilmington.
“The works on this album can be viewed as meditations on the many dimensions we each inhabit simultaneously throughout life,” says Whitney. “It includes meditations on our city, the paintings of Eunice LaFate, and moments in my personal life.”
Clifford Brown Year-Round will showcase jazz musicians from all over the world each month leading up to the 34th Annual Clifford Brown Jazz festival in June --the largest FREE jazz festival on the East Coast. December’s event will celebrate the holidays with the Cartoon Christmas Trio and the Wilmington Children’s Chorus. In 2021, the concert series continues with jazz musicians from Italy, a celebration of jazz vocalists, and an homage to the life of writer and political activist Alice Dunbar Nelson.
“In a time of separation and uncertainty we still have the ability to connect through music,” says Cultural Affairs Director Tina Betz, “The year-round concert series is a chance for people to gather in their homes and really get to experience not just the music but to connect with musicians through question and answer. It’s an incredible opportunity for all jazz-lovers and a boost for the local arts and music scene.”
All concerts begin at 7:00 p.m. and will have a small number of in-person tickets available. In-person tickets are $25 and virtual viewing tickets are $10. Tickets are available at buytickets.at/cityfest. The Jonathan Whitney performance this month is supported in part by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Division promotes Delaware arts events on DelawareScene.com.
