Dial 911, a sculpture honoring first responders by artist George Greenamyer, will become a new permanent art installation at the museum. The sculpture, donated to the museum by the City, had been displayed since 1988 outside Wilmington’s Public Safety Building on Walnut Street. The sculpture will make its new home in the museum’s newly created Hallway of Helpers exhibit. Additionally, the museum will also unveil the Celebration of Creativity collection donated by VSA Delaware, to be displayed near the museum’s entrance.
“The Delaware Children’s Museum helps to develop creative minds daily and we are thrilled to have incorporated two, new, vibrant, art installations into our guest experience which gave us the opportunity to partner with many community organizations” exclaimed DCM Executive Director Jennifer Bush. “Art has the ability to bring families and communities together and encourages self-expression and confidence in young children.”
“One of the gems of the Riverfront—the Delaware Children’s Museum—has now added to the many reasons why children and their families continue to enjoy this facility,” said Mayor Mike Purzycki. “It is especially heartwarming to know that the Dial 911 sculpture has a new home which also honors our first responders. This could not be more fitting, and I thank the DCM, the Riverfront Development Corporation and the City’s Office of Cultural Affairs for making it happen.”
The Friday, October 4 FREE celebration will take place as part of the city’s Art Loop from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will feature light refreshments and live music from local children’s band We Kids Rock. There will be a brief ceremony at 6 p.m. as City and DMC officials celebrate the official unveiling of the new art installations.
