Wilmington Mayor Issues Statement About Injured Police Officers And The Community's Response

Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki issued a statement this afternoon expressing his thoughts following an incident on North Market Street that unfolded over a long and harrowing twelve hours or more, and which saw three City police officers injured as they carried out their duties.

“My thanks and appreciation to the many people around the City and beyond who have expressed their good wishes and prayers for the speedy recovery of three Wilmington police officers who were shot last night while responding to an incident on North Market Street. I visited with two of the officers this morning at Christiana Hospital and spoke with the other officer by phone. They are in good spirits and are being well cared for by wonderful medical professionals. Most importantly, the officers are being loved and supported by their families.

“Chief Robert Tracy and his officers, assisted by Chief John Looney and the Wilmington Fire Department, and Wilmington’s other outstanding partner police and criminal justice agencies successfully managed and controlled a very tense and dangerous situation throughout the night. The incident displaced some nearby residents while others were forced to shelter in place. We are sorry for this disruption, but we appreciate their cooperation.

“The situation is now under control, but the police investigation is continuing. Now, we need to get our officers well and to ensure that local residents can return to their normal routines as quickly as possible. Protecting and defending this City and its people is a tremendously difficult task, but our police officers and their law enforcement partners did an outstanding job, and we thank them for their efforts.”
