GEORGETOWN, MD — When residents are ready to wander out for some fresh air and cultural excitement, check out the four new consecutive murals on the side of 1351 Wisconsin Avenue N.W. The murals are part of the 51st statehood advocacy murals project (#MuralsDC51) spanning across Washington, D.C., with artwork being installed in every ward. Residents also can use the Georgetown Murals guide for a self-guided tour of a dozen more public art pieces.
Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser commissioned #MuralsDC51, a project to create 51 statehood, Black history and social justice themed murals across all eight wards.
“On Juneteenth, we celebrate our progress while uplifting the change that still needs to happen in order to build a more fair and more just America,” said Bowser in a statement. “As more Americans learn about and join our fight for statehood, these murals will reflect our local pride and our commitment to seeing this fight through to the end – until we are officially the 51st state.”
The murals are being created by local artists and the project is part of the Murals DC program housed at the department of public works.
