Ellington School Renovations Meeting Planned

Learn about the proposed design and what it will mean for the community on Oct. 7.

Neighbors of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts will have the opportunity to learn more about the proposed $80 million redesign and upgrade planned for the Burleith school during an Oct. 7 meeting.

The meeting next Monday starts at 6 p.m. and will include representatives from the D.C. Public School System and D.C.'s construction agency, the D.C. Department of General Services.

DC released a request for proposals (RFP) in July 2012 and DC selected the design team at the end of this summer. At the September Advisory Neighborhood Commission meeting several neighbors of the school expressed frustration at not knowing more about the plans.

One commissioner said the early plans he said include a state of the art theater and below ground parking to accommodate teachers. The design will not include any expansion to the Ellington Field, which had been a concern among some Burleith neighbors.

The meeting will be Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, 3500 R St. NW.
