Georgetown Ministry Center Needs Volunteer Cooks This Weekend

Do you have some extra time this weekend? Consider taking a couple of hours to make beef stew for the homeless.

Georgetown Ministry Center is calling for six volunteers this Sunday to make and help deliver a hot bowl of beef stew to homeless in our community.

All you need to do is make enough beef stew to serve 12 people (you can use your secret family recipe or the one published below) and deliver the soup in a slow cooker or Crock Pot by 10 a.m. Sunday to Georgetown Ministry Center, 1041 Wisconsin Ave. NW.

Please also provide green salad for 12 (approximately two heads of lettuce), one loaf of bread (or 12 dinner rolls), and one stick of butter.

If you have time to stick around and help serve the meals, that's even better, but it's not required. Groups and families are encouraged to help out.

Beef Stew (Recipe provided by GMC)

Mix the following eight ingredients and place in the slow cooker at low setting for eight or nine hours.

• 2 - 14.5 oz. cans diced tomatoes  
• 3-4 Lbs. beef stew meat (cut in bite size cubes)
• 24 potatoes, medium, cut in half (3 Lbs.)
• 2 medium onions, cut into 8 wedges each
• 1 (16 ounce) bag baby carrots (about 60)
• 4 cups water
• 3 teaspoons seasoning salt
• 2 bay leaves

Whisk together one-half cup of water and 4 tablespoons of flour and gradually stir into beef mixture.

Cover and cook another 10-15 minutes on the high setting until slightly thickened.
