Mourners Gather for Funeral of Justice Antonin Scalia

The celebration of funeral mass was held at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Mourners came out in the thousands as bells tolled at the funeral mass for late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia who served the court for nearly three decades. The service at the largest Roman Catholic church in North America reflected Scalia’s life as a “man of faith,” and was celebrated by his son the Rev. Paul Scalia, a priest in the Arlington diocese.

Scalia’s casket arrived at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception just after 11 a.m. His casket was led out of the basilica to a private burial at the end of the service.

Those attending the funeral included Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden, Chief Justice John Roberts, Justices Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer, Samuel Alito, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, retired Justice John Paul Stevens and former Solicitor General Ted Olson and many of Washington’s elite. According to CNN, several members of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, including Sri Srinivasan and Patricia Millett are also in attendance.

President Obama was not in attendance.

On Friday, members of the public waited in line for hours to pay their respects to the late justice, who lay in repose at the Great Hall inside the Supreme Court building.

Scalia passed away in his sleep Feb. 13 while on a hunting trip in West Texas. He was 79.
