Ready for Ornaments, Capitol Christmas Tree 2014 Arrives in D.C.

The 2,000 mile journey has come to end as the Minnesota tree comes to the District.

It’s time to start rockin’ around the Capitol Christmas Tree because it’s finally here!

Otherwise known as “The People’s Tree,” it made appearances in seven states before reaching its new home on the front lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building on Friday.

The 88-foot white spruce was taken from the Chippewa National Forest in Minnesota. The Minnesota Tree Growers Association will provide smaller trees for inside official D.C. offices.

Among the locations on the tour that started Nov. 2 were Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland.

The Capitol Christmas Tree tradition began when Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John W. McCormack put a Christmas tree on the lawn in 1964. It wasn’t until 1970 that a different national forest was chosen to provide the tree each year.
