Traffic Cameras May Be Banned in D.C.

The bill would ban automated cameras and withhold highway funds.

Congressmen Steve Stockman of Texas and Kerry L. Bentivolio of Michigan are working to ban speed and red light cameras in the District.

If passed, information gained from the cameras cannot be used in court.

Eight photo enforced locations around D.C. began a 30 day trial period last month. Ending Dec. 2, the educational period enables automated cameras to distribute warning citations to those who do not follow the speed limit and stop signs.

The Metropolitan Police Department reports that the number of drivers who travel 10 miles per hour over the speed limit has improved from every one in three to one in 40 since the cameras were first introduced.

The bill introduced by the Republican congressmen would also take 10 percent of federal highway funds from the states that continue to use the cameras beginning Oct. 1.

Since Stockman did not receive a bid for Senate in March and Bentivolio lost in the August primary, both will be leaving Congress.
