13-Year-Old DC Girl Pleads Guilty To Murder In March Carjacking
Prosecutors agreed to drop other charges in exchange for a second-degree murder plea in connection with the death of Mohammad Anwar.

WASHINGTON, DC — A 13-year-old girl from Southeast Washington DC who police said attacked an UberEats driver at the Navy Yards near Nationals Park in March has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.
The girl is charged in connection with the death of Mohammad Anwar and is one of two girls police involved in the killing of the 66-year-old immigrant grandfather from Pakistan in the attempted carjacking. The other suspect has already pleaded guilty to killing Anwar, according to media reports.
The girl who entered the guilty plea on Thursday had previously been charged with armed carjacking, felony murder and other crimes. Prosecutors agreed to drop the charges in exchange for a guilty plea to the second-degree murder charge, WUSA9 reported on Thursday.

A D.C. Superior Court judge has set sentencing for July 6 but said at the hearing Thursday in which the girl appeared by video conference and said that the maximum time she can be held is until her 21st birthday.
Prosecutors said Thursday that Anwar had agreed to give both girls a ride in his Honda Accord shortly around 4:30 p.m., but when he pulled onto a side street near Nationals Park, they attempted to steal his car and his personal belongings.

The other suspect, who is 15 and from Port Washington, Maryland, jumped into the driver’s seat while the younger girl remained in her seat. Prosecutors said Anwar asked people on the street to help him, but the 15-year-old said that the car belonged to their mother.
Anwar was half inside the car when he tried to block the older suspect from taking the car, prosecutors said. One of the girls then yelled “Go, go, go” and jammed the car into gear, according to the television report.
Video of the incident shows the car speeding down Van Street SE with Anwar attempting to hold on. The car then hit a tree violently and crushed Anwar before the car continued and eventually flipped over and ejected Anwar, who was thrown to the pavement. Anwar was taken to a local hospital where he later died.
On Thursday, Circuit Court Judge Lynn Leibovitz asked if the details of the incident were true as they were portrayed. The girl said yes and then pleaded guilty, according to published reports.
A Go Fund Me effort started for Anwar’s family has raised more than $1 million.
