Amazon To Open Logan Circle Grocery Store As Expansion Continues

WASHINGTON, DC — As Amazon prepares to expand its grocery store operation to the East Coast, Logan Circle will be one of the first four destinations for the company to provide its unique brand of shopping to customers here.

Amazon announced Thursday that the D.C. store — in addition to Virginia and Maryland locations as well as one in suburban Philadelphia — will open stores in coming months. According to CNBC, Amazon declined Thursday to address specifically when the stores would open or if they will be under the Amazon Fresh branding umbrella.

An Amazon spokeswoman wrote in an email Friday morning that the store opening would create hundreds of jobs in the region. She said no further details were available at this time.

The Logan Circle store is expected to be located at the corner of 14th Street and Riggs Place in Northwest D.C., WTOP reported Thursday.

Hiring is underway for a future Amazon grocery store in Franconia. The store will be located in a space over 31,000 square feet at the Festival at Manchester Lakes shopping center.

A spokesperson could not confirm what type of store is opening or the anticipated opening date. The types of Amazon grocery stores include Amazon Fresh grocery stores and Amazon Go Grocery.

Amazon Fresh grocery stores have recently popped up in Southern California and in suburban Chicago. The stores are meant to reach a wide array of customers with competitive pricing along with some high-tech amenities such as smart Dash Carts, which allow shoppers to check out without going through a line and that track items as they are either placed in or removed from the carts. The stores also offer Amazon prime pick-up and drop-off services as well as Echo services throughout the store.

Bloomberg reported last month that Amazon has opened 11 Fresh stores around the country and has plans to unveil at least 28 new locations in coming months.
