Capitol Police Suspends 6 Officers, Investigating Dozens More

The officers were suspended with pay as part of the department's ongoing probe into the deadly Jan. 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol.

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Capitol Police have suspended six officers for their actions during the violent insurrection on the Capitol building, according to multiple reports citing a department statement. Additionally, Capitol Police are investigating 29 other officers as part of the department's ongoing probe into the events on Jan. 6.

The six officers were suspended with pay, NPR reported.

In the statement, Capitol Police Acting Chief Yogananda Pittman said that any member whose behavior is not kept within the department's rules of conduct "will face appropriate discipline."

At least 140 Capitol Police officers were injured during the riot. Video from the day appears to show some officers escorting rioters inside the building while others can be seen opening barricades and allowing the mob to enter the Capitol complex.
