Christmas 2019: What's Open, What's Closed In Washington DC
See how the Christmas holiday will affect government offices, transportation schedules and grocery store hours in Washington DC.
WASHINGTON, DC — Christmas Day falls on a Wednesday, meaning local government and other services will take a break mid week. It's a given that many services are closed on Christmas Day, but others will be closed Christmas Eve and surrounding days as well.
We've rounded up the closings and schedule changes to know around DC. Schools are closed for an extended winter break, while other services will run on half-day schedules on Christmas Eve.
DC Government Offices: All District of Columbia offices will be closed Christmas Day.

DC Courts: All courts are closed Christmas Day.
DC Public Schools: Closed Dec. 23-Jan. 1 for winter break.

Post Offices: Closed Dec. 25. No mail will be delivered.
DC Department of Motor Vehicles: Closed Dec. 25.
Parking: Parking meters will not be in effect Christmas Day. Residential parking and rush hour lane restrictions also will not be enforced.
DC Circulator: No service on Dec. 25.
DC Streetcar: Service will run regular hours Dec. 24. No service on Dec. 25.
Metrorail: On Dec. 25, the Metro system will be open 8 a.m.-11 p.m. and operate on a Sunday schedule. Parking will be free at all Metro parking facilities, and off-peak fares will be in effect all day. There are no scheduled changes for Dec. 24.
Metrobus: Buses will operate on a Sunday schedule on Dec. 25. See bus timetables.
National Mall and Memorial Parks: Open Christmas Day. Rangers are on duty at sites to answer questions from 9:30 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. Ford's Theatre and the Washington Monument are closed Christmas Day.
National Archives Building: Closed Christmas Day.
DC Public Library: All branches will be open 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Dec. 24 and will be closed Christmas Day.
Recreation/Community Centers: Closed Dec. 25.
Indoor Swimming Facilities: Closed Dec. 25.
Trash Collection: Sanitation services will be suspended Dec. 25, and trash and recycling collections will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week into Saturday.
Movie Theaters: Most area movie theaters will be open Christmas Day. We would encourage calling your theater of choice to confirm hours.
Grocery Stores: Area grocery stores hours are as follows —
- Safeway: 5 a.m.-8 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Christmas Day.
- Giant Food: Hours: 6 a.m.-7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Christmas Day.
- Harris Teeter: All stores will close at 7 p.m. Dec. 24 and re-open at 8 a.m. on Dec. 26.
- ALDI: 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
- Target: 7 a.m.-10 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
- Walmart: 6 a.m.-6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
- Trader Joe's: 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
- Whole Foods: 7 a.m.-7 p.m. on Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day
