Severe Thunderstorm Watch Posted For Parts Of NoVA, DC: Weather

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect Monday night for parts of northern Virginia and DC, according to the National Weather Service.

WASHINGTON, DC — A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for portions of northern Virinia Monday night. Strong storms are possible for parts of the DC region with gusty winds and close to an inch of rain possible.

The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook due to the potential for storms across the state. That was upgraded to a severe thunderstorm watch at 4 p.m. and runs until 9 p.m.

Damaging wind gusts and large hail are the main threats, according to the National Weather Service.

The watch includes western Maryland, the northern Shenandoah Valley, and eastern West Virginia.

The areas in the watch include: Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren, Clarke, Nelson, Albemarle, Greene, Madison, Rappahannock, Orange, Culpeper, Fauquier, Loudoun, Blue Ridge, Hampshire, Morgan, Berkeley, Jefferson and Hardy.

Elsewhere, scattered to numerous thunderstorms are possible Monday evening. Some storms may be severe, with the main threat being damaging wind gusts. Hail is also possible.

The forecast calls for showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m., then isolated showers between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m. Rain chances are 80 percent, the National Weather Service said. Expect between a quarter and half of an inch of rain.

DC area jurisdictions under the hazardous weather outlook include: District of Columbia, Prince William, Manassas, Manassas Park, Fairfax, Arlington, Falls Church, Alexandria, Stafford, Spotsylvania and King George.

"We have some gorgeous early summer weather on the way for the middle of this week, but today and tonight are humid, offering the chance of showers and storms," said the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang. "Tuesday through Thursday are about as good as it gets at this time of year before heat and some humidity return by Saturday."

Tuesday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 3pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. Northwest wind 14 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday night: A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 62. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday: Sunny, with a high near 80. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph.

Wednesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around 58.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 79.

Thursday night: Clear, with a low around 58.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 87.
