July 4: Extensive Road Closures Around National Mall In DC
Many roads around the National Mall in D.C. will be closed to traffic on Saturday, July 4.
WASHINGTON, DC — The area around the National Mall in D.C. will be filled with Fourth of July related activity, as well as First Amendment demonstrations on Saturday, July 4. At the same time, the Metropolitan Police Department and D.C. Department of transportation will be enacting extensive road closures.
According to an MPD release, the following streets will be closed beginning at 6 p.m. on July 3, to 11:59 p.m. on July 4:
- Independence Avenue, SW from 17th Street and Ohio Drive, SW
- 23rd Street, NW from Constitution Avenue, NW to Memorial Bridge
- Henry Bacon Drive from Constitution Avenue, NW to Memorial Circle
The following streets will be posted as Emergency No Parking from approximately 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. and closed to vehicular traffic from 6 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.:

- Theodore Roosevelt Bridge (TR Bridge) Inbound to Constitution Avenue; all traffic will be diverted to northbound South Potomac River Freeway
- Henry Bacon Drive, NW from Constitution Avenue to Lincoln Memorial Circle, NW
- Constitution Avenue from 9th Street to 23rd Street, NW
- Arlington Memorial Bridge (to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic)
- Southbound Rock Creek Parkway will be closed at Virginia Avenue, NW
- Maine Avenue, SW will be closed at I-395 to all westbound traffic
- Access to East Potomac Park from I-395 will be by National Park Service permit only
- The northbound HOV lanes of the 14th Street Bridge will be diverted to eastbound I-395. The northbound main lanes of the 14th Street Bridge will also be diverted to eastbound I-395.
- Independence Avenue, SW from 14th Street to 17th Street, SW
- 23rd Street, NW (northbound) from Constitution Avenue to Virginia Avenue, NW; southbound 23rd Street, NW will be allowed to flow and access outbound TR Bridge
- 22nd Street, NW from E Street to Constitution Avenue, NW
- 21st Street, NW from E Street to Constitution Avenue, NW
- 20th Street, NW from E Street to Constitution Avenue, NW
- 19th Street, NW from E Street to Constitution Avenue, NW

- 6th Street, NW from E Street to Constitution Avenue, NW

- 4th Street, NW from E Street to Independence Avenue, SW
- D Street from 3rd Street to 9th Street, NW
- Pennsylvania Avenue, NW from 3rd Street to 9th Street, NW
- Constitution Avenue, NW from 3rd Street to 9th Street, NW
- Indiana Avenue, NW from 3rd Street to 7th Street, NW
- 9th Street Tunnel
The 3rd Street Tunnel will remain open for travel into and out of the city.

The U.S. Department of the Interior will be restricting access to the National Mall to four entry points within the secure area, which extends from 17th Street to the Lincoln Memorial between Constitution Avenue N.W. to Independence Avenue S.W. Anyone who enters this area will be subject to a search, including all coolers, backpack, and packages.
The following entry points will open at 1 p.m. and remain open until 9 p.m.:
- Constitution Avenue NW at 20th Street NW;
- Constitution Avenue NW between 23rd Street NW and Henry Bacon Drive NW;
- 17th Street NW between Constitution Avenue NW and Independence Avenue SW (near the World War II Memorial); and
- East Basin Drive just south of the Jefferson Memorial (NOTE: Visitors will not be able to access the National Mall from here.).
"A supply of more than 300,000 cloth face coverings will be available and distributed to visitors attending the Independence Day celebration at the National Mall," the Interior release said. "These cloth face coverings are not surgical masks or respirators, and visitors should familiarize themselves with CDC considerations for wearing a cloth face covering."
