WASHINGTON, DC — A man died after being struck by a Metro train at the NoMa-Gallaudet station Sunday afternoon, according to Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

At approximately 1:47 p.m. Sunday, Metro’s rail operations control center received a report of a person struck by a train at NoMa-Gallaudet Station. Metro police and DC Fire & EMS responded to the scene.

"It appears based on review of station video that the adult male intentionally placed himself in the path of the train," Metro said in a statement.

Metro told Statter that the man’s body "was pinned under the train in such a way that the train needed to be moved to allow for removal." Moving the train meant restoring power to the third rail, which ended up causing the man’s body to become energized and start to smolder, according to Statter.

DC Fire and EMS was called back to the NoMa-Gallaudet station to help with removal of the man’s body, the department said in an email to Patch.

Red Line trains bypassed the station on a single track during the investigation. Rail service was restored to NoMa-Gallaudet around 9:45 p.m. Sunday, Metro said.
