Missing For Six Months, Dog Finally Reunited With Owners

With the help of Washington, DC-based Humane Rescue Alliance, one special pup was able to come home for the holidays.

WASHINGTON, DC — After lots of patience and perseverance by a local animal rescue organization, one DC family received one of the best Christmas gifts possible this week when they were reunited with their four-legged furbaby.

For months, animal control officers with the Humane Rescue Alliance in DC received calls about a large brindle dog running loose. He was elusive, they said, appearing then disappearing quickly into the woods bordering Prince George's County.

But with the help of a lot of treats, officers were finally able to earn the dog's trust and catch him.

Once officers scanned the dog for a microchip, they learned his name was Dwight — and his owners had been looking for him for nearly six months.

After Dwight was safe and sound at the HRA's New York Avenue facility, staff called Dwight's owners, who wasted no time getting there to reunite with their pup.

Now, according to HRA staff, Dwight is back at home, cuddling up with his family and enjoying a comfy couch. Owner Craig said he and Dwight's mom are thrilled to have him back in their lives.

"We've been worried ever since (he ran away) and could not shake the heartbreak," Craig said. "After seeing him with our own teary eyes, it was completely surreal and he went absolutely bonkers with excitement. He has fit right back into our lives without skipping a beat and this is truly a Christmas miracle. We couldn't ask for anything more."
