MLK Memorial Hosts Movie Night To Celebrate 10-Year Anniversary

Summer films are returning to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the National Mall, with the showing of the "Princess and the Frog."

Washington, DC — Summer films are returning to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the National Mall, with the showing of the “Princess and the Frog” on July 15 as part of the memorial’s 10-year anniversary celebration.

Walt Disney Studios’ “The Princess and the Frog” gives a Jazz Age-era twist on a classic tale. It features a beautiful girl named Tiana, a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again, and a fateful kiss that leads them both on a hilarious adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana.

Free face painting will be available for children before the 8 p.m. film start time on July 15. The free film screenings takes place on the lawn adjacent to the bookstore at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the National Mall. Guests are encouraged to arrive early and bring a blanket or low-profile lawn chair. Parking is limited and use of public transportation is encouraged.

"Over the last year, historic milestones for democracy and justice have collided with a pandemic that forced us physically apart,” said Harry E. Johnson, CEO of the Memorial Foundation, which exists to promote the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial.

“We are overjoyed that we can resume our film series at the Memorial this summer, so we can bring people together around movies that spark conversations about the principles that define Dr. King’s legacy as well as films such as this one that provides a great evening of family entertainment,” Johnson said in a statement.

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in D.C. opened to the public in August 2011.

The final film of the summer series, “Black Panther,” will screen on Aug. 18 at 8 p.m. The movie, starring the late Chadwick Boseman, follows T’Challa who, after the death of his father, takes his rightful place as King of Wakanda.
