See How High Rents Are Near George Washington University
A new analysis from RentCafe shows where students living off-campus end up paying the most money.

Students enrolling at some of the top universities in the U.S. end up paying vastly different amounts for rent if they choose to live off-campus, according to an analysis from RentCafe. George Washington University in D.C. was included in the RentCafe analysis.
The analysis identified average rent prices within a 1-mile radius of U.S. News & World Report’s top-100 ranked universities. RentCafe compared the average rent near each university campus with the average rent in the college’s city.
Rent near the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign was the cheapest among the top 100 colleges, costing an average of $890 per month, which was a little more than $500 cheaper than the average city rent in Champaign. By contrast, and to no one’s surprise, rents were highest near two New York schools; New York University and Columbia University.

Students living near NYU — ranked No.30 by U.S. News — end up paying a whopping $4,463 in rent within a one mile radius of the campus. At Columbia University — ranked the No.3 best college by U.S. News — students pay a slightly less but still alarming sum of $4,217 in rent.
Tuition and fees also differ at these colleges and the expensive rents only add to the burden of the already high fees some students pay. For example, in-state tuition at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign costs $15,998 per year and out-of-state tuition costs $32,568, according to U.S. News. Tuition at both NYU and Columbia University is higher than $50,000 per year with Columbia’s tuition touching nearly $60,000.

Tuition at eight of the 10 universities with the highest nearby rents identified by RentCafe was $50,000 or higher. Only half of the 10 universities with the lowest nearby rents had tuition that was $50,000 or higher.
George Washington University ranked 63rd for rents within a 1-mile radius with an average rent of $2,410 per month.
