Updated: Severe Thunderstorm Warning For NoVa, DC Area
National Weather Service issued upgraded its earlier watch to a severe thunderstorm warning for the D.C. metro area.

WASHINGTON, DC — The National Weather Service has upgraded its earlier alert from a watch to a full severe thunderstorm warning shortly after 5 p.m., for the Washington, D.C. metro region, including large portions of Maryland, Northern Virginia, and West Virginia.
The warning is in effect until 5:45 p.m. for the following areas:

- Northwestern District of Columbia
- Eastern Loudoun County in northern Virginia...

- Western Arlington County in northern Virginia
- The City of Falls Church in northern Virginia

A chance of showers and thunderstorms may appear before 4. p.m, with possible showers and thunderstorms sweeping the region between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m., according to NWS. Things may begin to change after 5 p.m., when showers and thunderstorm are likely.

NWS warns that some of these storms could be severe, bringing damaging winds and heavy rains to the region. The chance of showers and thunderstorms are likely to continue into the early morning hours.
Counties in Virginia affected by the watch include: Warren, Clarke, Nelson, Albemarle, Greene, Madison, Rappahannock, Orange, Culpeper, Prince William/Manassas/Manassas Park, Fairfax, Arlington/Falls Church/Alexandria, Stafford, Spotsylvania, King George, Fauquier, Highland, and Loudoun.
The risk for severe thunderstorms increases from marginal over central Virginia to slightly at risk north of Interstate 66 and Route 50, according to NWS. An enhanced risk of severe thunderstorms is expected along or near the Mason-Dixon Line.
