Sticky Fingers to Donate Funds to Comfort Cases

For the month of May, Sticky Fingers, in Washington D.C. will be donating $1 to Comfort Cases for every charity-themed cupcake sold.

From High10 Media: Comfort Cases, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides overnight bags with essential and comfort items such as toiletries, pajamas, and stuffed animals to children in foster care, announced that they have been chosen as the May Charity of the Month by Sticky Fingers. The award winning bakery and café, owned by Doron Petersan of Cupcake Wars fame, will donate $1 for each charity-themed cupcake sold in the month of May, National Foster Care Month. The "Comfort Cases Cupcake" is chocolate cake filled with vanilla cream and topped with ganache.

Comfort Cases was founded in 2013 by Rob Scheer. Scheer grew up in foster care and was always given a garbage bag in which to carry his belongings as he was moved from home to home. It was a humiliating experience.

He confronted the painful memories of those trash bags once again as an adult when he and his husband Reece adopted their 4 children out of foster care. Each child arrived with their belongings in a garbage bag. The haunting reminder of his childhood experience combined with the realization that nothing had been done to help give kids in foster care a better sense of dignity, led Scheer to take action.

To date, the organization has packed and donated over 18,000 cases to children in foster care. Scheer was recently featured as one of People magazine’s “Heroes Among Us” and his heartfelt story can be heard on the most watched Upworthy video ever.

“We are incredibly thankful to be chosen as the May Charity of the Month by neighborhood favorite, Sticky Fingers,” said Scheer. “We want to make sure that every child entering the foster care system will receive a Comfort Case to ease their journey and let them know that their community is supporting them. This generous outpouring of support from the Washington D.C. area puts us one step closer to realizing our goals!”

Sticky Fingers has been a mission-based business from day one, with philanthropy and advocacy as two of their core commitments. Always looking to support organizations that further their mission with their charity, activism, and ethos, Sticky Fingers kicked off their Charity of the Month Program in October 2015. Comfort Cases is proud to join the ranks of other organizations supported by Sticky Fingers including; the Washington Humane Society, Reading Partners, Human Rights Campaign, For Love of Children, Thrive DC and many more.

“My sister was adopted through the Foster Care System in 1979. So much has changed since then, but the one thing that remains the same is the need for compassion and dignity for all children moving through the foster care system,” said Sticky Fingers’ Doron Petersan. “We are proud to support such an amazing organization, and are humbled by the work of Comfort Cases.”
