Strong Winds Threaten DC, NoVa As Cold Front Moves Through

With wind gusts up to 50 mph moving through VA and DC, the National Weather Service has issued wind advisories and a thunderstorm watch.

WASHINGTON, DC —With wind gusts up to 50 mph moving through Virginia and D.C., the National Weather Service has issued wind advisories for Thursday afternoon. Very gusty winds in the range of 40 to 50 are likely at times through the afternoon.

Forecasts also are calling for showers and possibly a thunderstorm, with a severe thunderstorm watch in effect through 4 p.m. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds. A wind advisory for the region is in effect through 5 p.m.

The gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may occur in the region, according to the NWS. Motorists should use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a tall vehicle.

At 1 p.m., gusts approached 30 mph at both Washinton Reagan National and Dulles Airports, the NWS said. Winchester saw winds gusting to 46 mph.

On Good Friday, conditions will remain breezy, but high temperatures will be at least 20 degrees cooler, according to the National Weather Service. The high temperature on Friday is expected to be near 53, with winds of 13 to 18 mph increasing to 19 to 24 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 39 mph on Friday.

Thursday Afternoon: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 71. Windy, with a northwest wind 22 to 26 mph, with gusts as high as 45 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 41. West wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 53. Breezy, with a west wind 14 to 24 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 38. Northwest wind 6 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 60. West wind 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 18 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44.

Sunday: A chance of rain after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 40%.
