What's Open, Closed In DC For MLK Jr. Day 2020
Find out what offices are closed and services are affected by Monday's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday observance.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. forever shaped the American landscape as the most prominent leader of the civil rights movement. The memory of King, who was killed by an assassin's bullet in 1968, is honored on Monday, Jan. 20 (he was born Jan. 15) with a federal holiday.
Here is a list of the MLK celebrations that are taking place throughout the weekend:
SATURDAY/JAN. 18

MLK Jr. Family Program: 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., at Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum. Families can celebrate the holiday by participating in two workshops to create hands-on art conducted by art educators Alma Robinson and Rain. All materials will be provided. Free but registration is required. Tickets.
Rise Up, Debt Down: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Financial Empowerment Day of Service: 12 p.m., at Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School, 3200 6th St. S.E. Free but RSVP.

A Right To The City Author Talk Series: 2-4 p.m., at Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum. Author Theodore Greene talks about his book Not in MY Gayborhood: Gay Neighborhoods and the Rise of the Vicarious Citizen. Free but registration is required. Tickets
Let Freedom Sing: 7-9:30 p.m., at THEARC. The Howard Gospel Choir of Howard University presents a performance of traditional and contemporary gospel music. Tickets are $13-25.
MONDAY/JAN 20
Not Just Another Day Off: 10 a.m., at the Folger Shakespeare Library. Free but registration is required. A free reading of poetry and historical speeches by MLK, Gandhi, Frederick Douglass, Mary McLeod Bethune, and more. The Food Pantry of The Lutheran Church of the Reformationrequests donations of dry and boxed food items.
39th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Walk and Parade: 11: a.m., Anacostia Park, Good Hope Road, S.E. and Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave. S.E.
Bakari Sellers RCC MLK Keynote & Lunch: 11 a.m. at CenterStage at RCC. Bakari Sellers made history in 2016 by becoming the youngest member of the South Carolina state legislature and the youngest African American elected official in the U.S. Tickets · $5-10.
Let Freedom Ring!: 6 p.m. at The Kennedy Center. Chaka Khan and the Let Freedom Ring Choir will present a musical tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This event is free, but general admission ticket will be handed out starting at 4:30 p.m. Limit two tickets per person. Limited seating is available.
TUESDAY/JAN 21
Carpe Diem Arts-Washington Revels Community & Family Sing: 6:30-8:30 p.m., at Takoma Village Cohousing. The Carpe Diem-Washington Revels Family & Community Sing will present songs of peace, liberty and justice in honor of MLK. Tickets: $5.
But just what is open and what is closed in our area on MLK Day? Here's a quick breakdown to help you out.
- Government offices: closed
- Schools: closed
- DMV: closed
- Libraries: closed
- Metrorail — The Metrorail system will be open Jan. 20, from 5 a.m. t0 11:30 p.m. Trains will be operating on a Saturday schedule, which means they will be leaving endpoint terminals every 12 minutes. Off-peak fares will be in effect all day and parking will be free at all Metrorail parking facilities. Scheduled track work will take place Jan. 20, on the Red Line.
- Metrobus — Buses will operate on a Saturday supplemental schedule. Some late-night (post-midnight trips will be cancelled on some routes. Riders are asked to check the timetable for their route for more details.
- MetroAccess will operating on normal hours.
