'Forget Your Purse, Let's Go': Florida Rescue Captured On Video

Deputies saved a 73-year-old woman from a sinking car. Their body cameras filmed the harrowing rescue.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, FL — Body camera footage released this week captured the dramatic and heroic moment two Volusia County deputies rescued a 73-year-old woman — and her purse — from her sinking car.

The terrifying event happened last weekend in the DeLand area, according to WFLA, after the woman reportedly missed her turn and ended up in a retention pond.

Deputies Nicholas Maletto and Patrick O'Melia arrived just as the front half of the car was sinking beneath the dark water.

Maletto, the first deputy on the scene, WFLA reported, swam to the car and urged the woman to "climb out the back" since the front doors would not open.

Maletto was soon joined by O’Melia, and at one point, one of the officers can be heard saying, "forget your purse, let's go!"

Both deputies were able to pull the woman safely to shore, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said in a tweet. They "even grabbed her purse on the way out."
