FLORIDA — Heavy winds and rain slammed central Florida as Tropical Storm Elsa passed by Tuesday, July 6. As the storm continued to track north, the Tampa Bay area was fortunately spared any major structural damage.

According to The Associated Press, at least one person died in the wake of the storm's path. This came shortly after the horrific collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside claimed dozens of lives on June 24. The storm only further complicated search efforts at the site, as crews were held back from the rubble due to the dangerous conditions.

With more than 7 inches of rain was recorded at a weather station near Gainesville, the threat of flooding loomed over the Carolinas. Even though Elsa's winds weakened to 40 mph (65 kph), the storm dropped torrential rains as it made its way through South Carolina early Thursday, reported the National Hurricane Center. Forecasts call for the storm to move over North Carolina later in the day, pass near the eastern mid-Atlantic states by Thursday night and move near or over the northeastern United States on Frida.
