Miami-Dade Elementary Teacher Victim Of Carjacking In School Lot

A Miami-Dade school teacher was the victim of a carjacking as she was leaving​ Biscayne Gardens Elementary School, according to police.

MIAMI, FL — A Miami-Dade school teacher was the victim of an armed carjacking as she was leaving Biscayne Gardens Elementary School, according to Miami-Dade police. The incident happened shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday as 59-year-old Flora Martinez was getting into her dark blue Toyota Corolla in the teacher's parking lot.

"The subject was armed with a firearm, and demanded the vehicle keys," explained Detective Argemis Colome of the Miami-Dade Police Department. "The victim handed the subject the keys and ran toward the school. A second subject entered the vehicle and both drove away."

Colome said the teenage carjackers didn't get very far.

"The subjects crashed the vehicle into a curb as they exited the parking lot, causing the vehicle to become disabled," he said. "Both subjects then exited the vehicle and fled on foot. There were no injuries reported."

Miami-Dade police released surveillance video of the carjacking on Wednesday. Police are asking the public to come forward if they recognize the thieves.

The teenagers are believed to be between 15 and 17 years of age, according to Colome.
