HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is testing cruise lights on some of their patrol vehicles. Cruise lights are always on and dimmer than emergency lights and don't flash, the sheriff's office said in a news release.

According to the release, cruise lights have been shown to decrease the number of vehicles stolen, arrests, vehicle burglaries and accidents.

"Cruise lights make it possible for our deputies to be more visible," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "In turn, we hope that will deter crime."

The sheriff's office is testing the cruise lights for a six-month trial period, currently in Lutz, Nuccio Park, Carrolwood, Sun City and Bloomingdale.

"The main reason we're using cruise lights is because we want our community to know that our deputies are out there, being more visible, keeping their community safe," Chronister said in the release.
