Kratom has been gaining popularity in recent years, especially among the recovery community. One one hand, it is a controversial herb that is viewed as a relapse or start of a relapse. On the other, some view it as a safe alternative to opioids and heroin.

Kratom is a part of the coffee family and native to Thailand. It is commonly used over there for cough syrups and other medicinal remedies. Strangely, it can have the effects of both a depressant or stimulant. Kratom is believed to boost focus and energy levels when taken in small amounts. In larger amounts, it can act as a sedative and help manage pain, anxiety or insomnia. Kratom can be eaten raw or brewed and blended with tea. Perhaps the most interesting but controversial characteristic of kratom is that it binds to and activates the opioid receptors. In other words, it effects the brain the same way common painkillers do. The highly addictive and habit-forming potential of kratom is a major reason why it is condemned by some.

One of the biggest debates, especially among the recovery community, is whether or not kratom use counts as a relapse. On one side, it can be argued that taking or using anything to feel different should be considered a relapse. Some view it as a way of people to get high without having to rely on illicit drugs. Kratom use can also be viewed as simply replacing one addiction for another. Kratom could definitely be a dangerous lead-up to a relapse. Kratom use could cause someone to crave something more powerful and effective, thus turning back to illicit drugs occurs. It is important to have a solid relapse prevention plan, especially for people who are new in recovery.

The argument for kratom is that it is not an illegal substance. Some believe it could be valuable in harm reduction. Needles are not involved which can prevent diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis C. While kratom overdoses and deaths have happened, it is not anywhere close to fatal deaths caused by heroin, painkillers or synthetic opioids such as fentanyl. Kratom, like any substance, should only be taken in moderation and not combined with any other substances. Death by kratom usually occurs when taken in excessive amount or combined with alcohol or medications. Kratom could be a safe alternative in low amounts and if it comes from a trusted source.

Kratom is not regulated which can definitely be a cause for concern. Anyone can grow and harvest kratom. The danger of fake and low-quality kratom exists. It is also possible to suffer from a hangover from kratom use. The most common symptoms are nausea, fatigue and constipation. More severe symptoms include anxiety, shakes and irritability. The withdrawal symptoms of kratom are eerily similar to opioid withdrawals. The common side effects of kratom may include:
