Pompano Beach Crash: Car Flips Onto Tracks; 2 Girls Dead, 5 Hurt

Seven children between 12 and 14 were in the stolen Toyota sedan​ when it crashed early Sunday, the Broward County Sheriff​'s office​ said.

POMPANO BEACH, FL — Two girls between 12 and 14 years old were killed when a stolen car veered off a roadway, crashed into a metal crossing arm and flipped onto railroad tracks in Pompano Beach, multiple media outlets reported. Video posted by WTVJ-TV Sunday shows a mangled car lying upside down on CSX tracks.

Seven children, all between 12 and 14, were in the stolen Toyota sedan when it crashed early Sunday, the Broward County Sheriff’s office told media outlets. The car had been traveling west on Northwest 15th street before the wreck.

Five children — one boy and four girls — were hospitalized at Broward Health Medical Center.

Homicide investigators are trying to figure out what led to the deadly crash, The Sun-Sentinel reported.

Sections of Northwest 15th Street were closed. Rail traffic was stopped for the investigation.

Deputies haven't named the children, but relatives told media outlets that one of the dead girls was 12-year-old Chayanna Nesmith.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. near the crash site.

Robert Runcie, superintendent of Broward schools, offered his condolences to the victims.

“Our prayers and condolences for our families and community grieving this terrible loss,” he said on Twitter.
