Authorities Say: Don't Forget to Shuffle for Stingrays!
Authorities are reporting an increase in jellyfish and stingray activity around the barrier islands, according to the Longboat Key Fire Rescue.

Here are some tips to keep from getting stung:
First of all, beach goers should check the beach warning flags located at lifeguard stations for the surf conditions and dangerous marine life.
One way people can prevent stepping on a stingray is by doing the "stingray shuffle," where a swimmer drags their feet through the sand, scaring the stingrays that are submerged in the sand.Â

However, people who do get stung are encouraged to place their feet in the hot water until the pain subsides. Authorities also recommend seeing a doctor in case there is a piece of the barb left in the wound.
If you are stung by a jellyfish, soaking the affected area in a part water, part vinegar solution will help with the pain. However, the remedy will not work if the sting is from a Portuguese man-o-war.
