Bradenton Residents Reminded to Hold the Fertilizer this Summer

To help keep our area waterways clean, the Sarasota Bay Estuary Program reminds residents not to use fertilizers with nitrogen and phosphorus from June 1 through Sept. 30.

The Sarasota Bay Estuary Program is reminding residents not to use fertilizer products containing nitrogen and phosphorus from June 1 through Sept. 30, in accordance with Sarasota and Manatee county urban fertilizer ordinances.

"Rainwater washes excess fertilizer into storm drains, which results in nitrogen and phosphorus being transported into Sarasota Bay through tributaries and storm drains," the SBEP said in an announcement posted on Patch. "These chemicals can fuel excessive growth of algae, which smothers natural vegetation and feeds invasive weeds."

The organization has additional tips for Bay-friendly living. See its recent announcement on Patch for more.
