Florida Coronavirus Cases Top 50,000 Mark

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Florida topped the 50,000 mark on Saturday.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Florida topped the 50,000 mark on Saturday as health officials reported a total of 50,127 cases.

The number represents an increase of 676 new cases in Florida over the previous 24-hour period.

State health officials reported a total of 2,233 deaths, up from 2,190 deaths involving Florida residents a day earlier.

Thirteen Florida counties reported 43 new deaths Saturday over the previous 24-hour period compared to 59 new deaths Friday, 51 on Thursday, 43 Wednesday, 55 Tuesday, 24 deaths Monday and eight last Sunday.

Miami-Dade reported 15 new deaths Saturday. Broward County reported six deaths. Palm Beach County reported four new deaths.

Collier County reported three deaths as did Sarasota County. Hillsborough County reported two new deaths as did Charlotte County, Clay County and Pinellas County.

Escambia County reported one new death as did Jefferson County, Manatee County and Orange County

Florida had a 5.9 percent positive test rate for the virus based on a total of 858,112 tests that had been administered as of Saturday. The number of hospitalizations in Florida increased to 9,310 from 9,117 a day earlier.

A total of 28,483 cases — or some 57 percent of the state's total — were in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Miami-Dade reported 16,694 confirmed cases of the virus as of Saturday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 6,649 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 5,140 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,823 cases as of Saturday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,768 cases.
