Florida Surpasses 7,000 Coronavirus Deaths

Florida surpassed 7,000 coronavirus deaths Saturday after the state set five single-day records in eight days for the most reported deaths.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — Florida surpassed 7,000 coronavirus deaths Saturday after the state set five single-day records in eight days for the most reported deaths. in any 24-hour period.

Florida health officials reported a total of 7,022 deaths, up from 6,843 a day earlier which represents an increase of 179 new deaths over the previous 24-hour period.

Saturday's increase followed Friday's record of 257 new deaths — breaking Thursday's record of 253 deaths, Wednesday's record of 216 deaths, Tuesday's record of 186 deaths and the July 23 record of 173 deaths last week.

While the reported deaths in some cases have been spread over an extended period, new deaths have been reported daily by the state and its counties.

Health officials reported 480,028 cases of the virus Saturday, up from 470,386 total cases of the virus a day earlier. That represents an increase of 9,642 new cases over the previous one-day period.

Health officials reported 26,972 hospitalizations in the state up from 26,533 hospitalizations over the previous 24 hours. That represents an increase of 439 more hospitalizations than reported a day earlier.

Thirty-seven of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths Saturday. That compares to 270 new deaths Friday (state health officials reported 257), 253 new deaths Thursday, 216 new deaths reported Wednesday, 185 new deaths reported Tuesday (Florida health officials reported 186), 78 new deaths Monday (state health officials reported 77), 77 new deaths Sunday and 124 new deaths last Saturday.

Miami-Dade County reported 36 new deaths. Palm Beach County reported 18 new deaths. Neighboring Broward County reported 33 new deaths. Those three counties are considered the epicenter of Florida's outbreak.

Orange County reported 16 new deaths. Osceola County reported eight new deaths. Hillsborough County reported six new deaths. Lee County reported five new deaths as did Pinellas County and St. Lucie County. Duval County reported four new deaths.

Charlotte County reported three new deaths as did Highlands County, Indian River County and Manatee County. Citrus County reported two new deaths as did Collier County, Escambia County, Okaloosa County, Santa Rosa County, Seminole County, St. Johns County and Sumter County.

Gulf County reported its second death from the virus on Saturday. Bradford County reported one new death as did Brevard County, Desoto County, Franklin County, Gadsden County, Hernando County, Jackson County, Marion County, Monroe County, Polk County, Putnam County, Sarasota County, Volusia County and Wakulla County.

Florida reported a 13.03 percent positive test rate for the virus Saturday as the number of tests reached 3,684,875.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported 121,207 cases of the virus. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 56,797 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach, West Palm and Boca Raton, reported 33,854 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 29,589 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 29,466 cases.
