Garbage Pickup Canceled Tuesday In Bradenton, Sandbags Available

As Tropical Storm Elsa approaches Florida, the city of Bradenton and Manatee County prepare for its impact.

BRADENTON, FL — With Tropical Storm Elsa approaching Florida, causing the Manatee County landfill to close, Bradenton has canceled its solid waste collection Tuesday, according to a news release from the city.

City officials ask residents to not place their garbage or yard waste at the curb Tuesday. Normal collection should resume Wednesday, the city said.

Trash collection was already impacted by the Fourth of July holiday this week. Normal Monday and Thursday collections will take place Wednesday and Friday and normal Tuesday and Thursday collections will happen Thursday and Saturday, the city said.

The city is also distributing sandbags at the Public Works Annex at 1411 9th Street W. until 4 p.m. Tuesday. Residents can enter off of 9th Street W. at the side of the annex, which leads into the sandbag area behind the building, the city said. Sandbag distribution will be limited to 10 bags per car and will need to show a valid ID to prove residency.

Tropical Storm Elsa is forecasted to bring significant rain and storm surge to the area, the city said. Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather information and to sign up for CodeRED emergency alerts, the city said.

Manatee County opened a pet-friendly emergency shelter at Manatee High School Tuesday at 8 a.m. The county has issued a non-mandatory evacuation for those who live in mobile homes, low-lying areas or areas prone to flooding.

Residents on the Special Needs Registry are currently being contacted to set up arrangements for evacuation to the county's special needs shelter, which is designated for those who are oxygen or electricity dependent to survive.

The Manatee County Public Works Department is providing sandbags at three locations. A self-serve distribution site is open at the Public Works Department Stormwater Facility at 5511 39th Street E. in Bradenton. A full-service distribution site is open at GT Bray Park at 5502 33rd Ave. Drive W. in Bradenton. And a pre-made sandbag distribution site is open in the Manatee Beach parking lot at 4000 Gulf Drive in Holmes Beach.

Each site will continue to operate as long as the weather permits. There's a limit of 10 sandbags per household, the county said. Visit www.mymanatee.org/sandbags for more information.

All Manatee County Area Transit fixed-route bus and trolley service will be suspended at noon on Tuesday and will resume service at noon on Wednesday. MCAT Handy Bus service on Tuesday will be restricted to riders traveling to and from medical appointments only, the county said.

The Lena Road Landfill will close Tuesday and reopen Wednesday for regular hours or as soon as weather permits.

There will be no garbage or recycling collected on Tuesday in unincorporated Manatee County.

There will be no recycling collected this week. Yard waste and garbage will be collected Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as usual. All collections will return to normal on July 12, the county said.
